Freelance software development, design, writing and marketing. Remote employment for companies outside Spain. Consulting and contracting. Online teaching. Running a small business remotely.
Set by wherever your clients or employer are, which is the entire economic logic of the arrangement. What Spain changes is the cost side and the tax side.
Non-EU citizens can apply for the digital nomad visa introduced by the Startups Law, which permits remote work for companies established outside Spain, subject to income thresholds, qualification or experience requirements, and a limit on how much of your income may come from Spanish clients. It can lead to a multi-year residence permit and has a favourable tax option attached in some cases.
EU citizens do not need it, but do need to deal with tax residency: 183 days in a calendar year makes you a Spanish tax resident on worldwide income. Registering as autónomo brings a monthly social security contribution under an income-banded system, quarterly tax filings and invoicing obligations.

Not applicable in the usual sense — this is client and contract work. The practical infrastructure is coworking spaces, which in Valencia, Las Palmas and Málaga function as the real professional network.
As autónomo you invoice rather than being employed, with no unemployment protection of the employed kind and your own social security contributions to make. Understand what you are giving up as well as what you are gaining.
