Teach English in Spain

134 live listings

Teaching English is the most reliable way into Spain for a native or fluent English speaker with no Spanish, and it has been for decades. It is also frequently misrepresented as easier and better paid than it is, so this page tries to be plain about both halves.

Typical jobs

Private language academies, which are the bulk of the market and hire in a rush in September. In-company classes, teaching business English on client sites — better paid per hour, with travel between classes unpaid. Government-run language assistant programmes placing assistants in state schools. Private tutoring, which pays the best per hour and takes time to build. Summer camps, intense and seasonal. International schools, which are a different profession requiring a full teaching qualification.

What it pays

Academy work is usually paid by the hour, and "full-time" often means 20–25 contact hours because preparation and travel are unpaid. The realistic question is the monthly total, not the hourly rate. In-company and private classes pay more per hour but come with gaps and travel. Language assistant programmes pay a fixed monthly stipend for a part-time timetable, designed to cover living costs rather than to save from. International school salaries are a different scale entirely.

Requirements and qualifications

A recognised certificate — CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or a solid TEFL course — is the practical entry ticket for academy work, and a four-weekend online course is treated as less serious than a full one. A degree is required for the visa route for non-EU citizens and often for the job. For international schools, a full teaching qualification and classroom experience.

The right to work is the real gate for non-EU citizens. The main legal routes are the government language assistant programmes and student visas with limited work permission; a language academy will rarely sponsor a work permit.

Who is hiring

National academy chains and independent local academies in every city. In-company training providers in Madrid and Barcelona. The Ministry of Education's language assistant programme and the regional equivalents. International schools across the larger cities and the coasts.

Contracts and conditions

The academic year runs September to June and hiring is concentrated in late August and September. Many academy contracts are fixed-term for that period and end in June, which means no income in July and August — the single most important thing to plan for in this line of work.
