Málaga has changed faster than any other Spanish city in the last decade. A deliberate push to attract technology employers has produced a genuine tech cluster on the Costa del Sol, layered on top of a very large tourism industry.

Two markets in one place. Tourism and hospitality along the coast is huge, highly seasonal and hires continuously at the entry level. The technology sector — anchored by the Málaga TechPark and a string of international companies opening development and support centres — is smaller but growing and pays considerably better.
The foreign-resident population along the coast also sustains a services economy operating largely in English.
Tourism and hospitality, technology and software, cybersecurity, customer support and shared services, construction and real estate, and health services aimed at the international resident population.
Among the best in Spain for English-language work, for an unusual reason: the coastal foreign-resident population means estate agents, clinics, legal services and hospitality all operate in English routinely. Add the international tech employers and the language academies, and there is more genuinely available here than the city's size suggests.
Tech salaries are below Madrid but the cost gap is wide enough that many people come out ahead. Hospitality pays at or near the sector convenio minimum and is heavily seasonal — a summer contract is not an annual salary.
Cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona, though the coastal towns west of the city are not. Rents in Málaga city have risen sharply with demand from remote workers and short-term lets.
Local trains along the coast to Fuengirola, a small metro, and buses. The airport is unusually well connected for a city this size, which matters for anyone travelling for work. Inland or up-coast jobs generally need a car.
The historic centre is expensive and busy. Soho and El Perchel are central and mixed. Teatinos is where the university and much of the newer housing is. El Limonar and Pedregalejo are residential and pleasant. The coastal towns — Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola — are a train ride away and a different market again.
The Andalusian employment service (SAE) alongside SEPE. Málaga TechPark publishes vacancies from its resident companies. The Costa del Sol's English-language press and community groups are a real, if informal, part of how jobs get found here.
