Typical jobs

Software engineering, product and design. Customer support and success. Marketing, content and SEO. Sales and business development. Data and analytics. Finance and accounting operations. Anything a company already runs across offices tends to be the first thing it runs remotely.

What it pays

Two very different situations. A locally-contracted remote role at a Spanish company pays Spanish rates. A remote role for a company abroad usually pays that country's rates, which is why the arrangement is attractive — but the employer needs a legal way to employ you in Spain, and "we will just keep paying you as before" is often not one.

Requirements and qualifications

The legal position matters more than the job description. Spain has a digital nomad visa (under the Startups Law) for non-EU citizens working remotely for companies outside Spain, with income and qualification conditions attached. EU citizens do not need a visa but do become Spanish tax residents after 183 days in a calendar year, which changes where they pay tax.

If your employer has no Spanish entity, the common routes are an employer-of-record arrangement or working as a registered freelancer (autónomo). Both have real costs. Take actual advice rather than forum advice — this is the part people get expensively wrong.

Who is hiring

Distributed technology companies hiring across Europe. Spanish companies with remote or hybrid policies, which became far more common after 2020. Agencies and consultancies. Employer-of-record providers acting as the legal employer for a company with no Spanish presence.

Contracts and conditions

Spain regulates remote work specifically: where an employee works remotely on a regular basis, there must be a written remote-work agreement, and the employer is required to cover the costs the arrangement creates. Freelancers (autónomos) pay a monthly social security contribution under an income-banded system and must invoice properly — budget for it from day one.
