Typical jobs
Customer support and inside sales for northern European markets. Teaching English, both in academies and in schools. Technology roles at companies that operate in English by default. International schools, from teaching to administration. Multilingual shared service centres — finance, HR, procurement — run by large corporates in Madrid and Barcelona. Tourism and hospitality in places with a large English-speaking visitor population.
What it pays
Enormously variable, because these are not one job market but several. Customer support roles hiring for language sit near the lower end. Technology and international school roles sit well above it. Teaching in a private academy is usually paid by the hour and the hours are not always full-time — work out the monthly figure before accepting.
Requirements and qualifications
For most roles: fluent or native English, and the legal right to work in Spain. For EU/EEA and Swiss citizens that is automatic; for everyone else it is the hard constraint, and it usually has to be solved before an employer will talk seriously. Teaching roles generally want a recognised certificate such as CELTA, TEFL or TESOL, and international schools want a full teaching qualification from your home system.
Who is hiring
Shared service centres and outsourcing companies in Madrid and Barcelona. International and bilingual schools across the larger cities. Private language academies everywhere. Technology companies, concentrated in Barcelona and Madrid with a growing cluster in Málaga. Tourism operators along the coasts and islands.
Contracts and conditions
Permanent contracts (indefinido) are common in corporate roles. Academy teaching often runs on a fixed-term academic-year contract from September to June, which leaves the summer unpaid — plan for it. Hospitality on the coasts is heavily seasonal.
