Typical jobs
Subject teachers at international and bilingual schools following British, American or IB curricula. Primary and secondary teaching in the Spanish state system, which is entered through competitive public examinations (oposiciones). University teaching and research. Vocational training (Formación Profesional). Early years and nursery. Specialist and support roles — SEN, learning support, librarians, counsellors.
Requirements and qualifications
International schools want a full teaching qualification from your home country and, usually, experience in that curriculum. The Spanish state system requires the relevant degree, the pedagogical qualification (Máster en Formación del Profesorado) and success in the oposiciones, which is a serious multi-year commitment. University posts follow their own accreditation system.
Qualification recognition (homologación) is a slow bureaucratic process. Start it long before you need it.
Who is hiring
International and bilingual school groups, concentrated in Madrid, Barcelona and along the coasts. Regional education departments for state schools. Public and private universities. Vocational training centres.
Contracts and conditions
International schools hire on the academic year with recruitment peaking between January and April for a September start — much earlier than the language academy cycle. State school positions are permanent civil service posts once secured, with a substantial interim (interino) workforce alongside.
